Guest Post - Lisa Shares How Our Ships Adapt to New Ports!

Hello from somewhere in the Mediterranean.  Captain Bill, John McGirl and I are on an extended trip in Europe, visiting Adventure, Navigator and Voyager of the Seas.  At one time we never thought the Voyager class would leave Florida, and here we are visiting three in the Mediterranean.

We boarded Adventure in Rome, sailed to Palma de Majorca, transferred to Navigator and sailed back to Rome.  We then flew (what an experience that was – with a 6-hour delay, we barely made it) to Voyager in Barcelona.  This is the glamorous part of the job!!  Then back to Rome we went on Voyager!

All three ship visits were different.  It was interesting to see the different nationality mixes onboard each ship, yet the common theme was everyone enjoying the experience in their own way.   No matter where people were from, the ice show is still the most popular entertainment around!

Adventure is spending her first summer in Europe after being in San Juan for nine years, so they have had to make some adjustments.  We were all impressed with how they have handled the transition and it appears that she has been sailing in the Mediterranean for years.  The biggest adjustments were related to ensuring we had the appropriate language skills.  We also had to change the entertainment, so it was less about the language and more visual so everyone onboard could enjoy it.  Dining times also were adjusted to account for the demand for later dinner seatings.

Only one day during our trip did we get the opportunity to get off the ship and have a few hours in Sardinia.  We joined our Captain and Hotel Director for lunch shore side.  Our Hotel Director Tony is actually from there, so we went to an amazing local restaurant.  There weren’t any menus, and they just kept bringing course after course after course of fish.  The guys loved it.  I’ve never seen so much food, and was later told that was just meant to be the appetizer.  The guys all loved the meal, unfortunately I don’t eat fish, but I greatly enjoyed watching them enjoy the feast and had some very good local cheeses and great conversation.  Our Captain on Navigator is only 34 and he is impressive.   Many of the crew came up to me and mentioned how much they love Captain Patrick.  We are very focused on crew satisfaction, so it is always great to get unsolicited feedback from the crew.

The crew on all three ships are really enjoying Europe and seeing new places, versus the familiar islands in the Caribbean.  During our all-crew meetings, they were also very excited by our new TV commercials featuring the DreamWorks characters.  Those commercials got the biggest rounds of applause we’ve heard lately.  I always ask the crew what they like most about the meetings and they often tell me the videos of Oasis and what is happening with the other ships, so we try to ensure the crew is very aware of all our new programs and what is happening in the fleet.

On Voyager, we actually held the Anchored in Excellence all-crew meeting in Studio B.  We’ve never done that before, and it was really great.  They opened up with our guest skater performing.  That was a real WOW for the crew; sounds like we just found a new way to “Deliver the Wow” to our crew as well.   None of us fell on the ice, so that was good news too!

We had an interesting entertainment experience on Voyager also.  When we were in Muscat last year, we heard an amazing duo of a piano player and singer called Blisstronic.  They were so good that I asked them if they might be interested in performing on a cruise ship.  Ironically, their first week on Royal was the week we were onboard for Anchored in Excellence.  They were a huge hit onboard.  I also think they would be amazing in the jazz club on Allure, so maybe that is where they will go next.   You never know where you can find great entertainment.  If you ever see anyone amazing, let us know.

Guest Post - Anchored in Excellence Visit to Asia

Lisa Bauer - Senior VP, Hotel Operations

What a week we picked to do our Anchored in Excellence (AIE) visit to see how Legend of the Seas was doing in her home in Asia. We flew into Tokyo to join the ship. What we didn’t realize was that is was the Japanese holiday of Golden Week, so it was a special time to be in Japan.

We actually sailed from Yokohama. This is a very impressive cruise terminal and we had a great sail away with a band in full costume playing “Anchors Away” and the entire check-in staff came out to bow and wave to us. It was our first embarkation in this port and it was historic for a number of other reasons as well. For Royal, it was a record number of Japanese guests onboard at a count of over 1,500. It also was a record for Yokohama to have so many Japanese guests embark and sail on a passenger cruise ship.

We were very focused on ensuring our Japanese guests had a great experience and we flew Travis, our chef from Izumi on Oasis, to consult with our executive chef onboard Legend. Travis created an amazing Sushi and traditional Japanese menu and also did a demonstration in the Centrum, it was a huge hit with all our guests, including some Diamond Crown & Anchored guests from Tennessee! It also happened to be my birthday during our AIE visit, so I was very spoiled by Travis and he made me some amazing tempura. The onboard team also ensured that there was plenty of birthday cake too!

Guest Post: Lisa Shares her Experience Onboard Freedom of the Seas

Lisa Bauer - Senior VP, Hotel Operations

Lisa Bauer - Senior VP, Hotel Operations

Hello from Freedom of the Seas. Seems like just yesterday we were introducing her to the world, but actually it has been four years already. It was a great week to be onboard, because lots of new things were being introduced and rolled out. I know when I share this info. it sounds like I have a great job and get to eat and sample all the great food. The good news is that the gym onboard is the best at sea, so after we sampled all the new offerings, we visited the gym. We are onboard Freedom of the Seas for our Anchored in Excellence visit. The “we” of course is Captain Bill and John McGirl.

This visit featured the Freedom of the Seas launch of the Chocolate Breakfast. This was Adam’s idea that was launched on Oasis and is now being implemented across the fleet. How cool is it to have chocolate waffles with caramel-banana toppings or chocolate pancakes with whipped cream? This went great with the hot chocolate. Needless to say, we had a sugar buzz for the early meetings. The chocolate breakfast is offered once per sailing, and is complimentary. Also, launching for breakfast is a new “build your own” cereal bar. Guests were able to choose from traditional Bircher Muesli or a selection of Granolas.

The highlight of the menu introductions, for me, was the new menu at Portofino. Not to worry, the favorites are still there, like the shrimp risotto appetizer, but there are now a number of new menu additions that have become a huge hit this week. The new menu featured a tuna steak that I overheard a guest refer to as “divine,” a T-bone steak, and lamb chops. Also new, are a number of appetizers that can be shared, like prosciutto salad or fried zucchini.

Guest Post – Dubai is Brilliant on Brilliance

Lisa Bauer - Senior VP, Hotel Operations

Lisa Bauer - Senior VP, Hotel Operations

Greetings from 35,000 feet. We are just on our way back from an amazing visit to Brilliance of the Seas in Dubai. The three of us John Mc Girl, VP Human Resources and Captain Bill Wright, Sr. VP Marine Operations (also known as Captain Storm by me from his time on Oasis) continue our travels to all 21 of our ships.

This weeks Anchored in Excellence Program (AIE) was to Dubai to visit the leadership team and crew onboard Brilliance of the Seas. Brilliance began her 7 night itineraries three weeks ago, and we wanted to see how this new itinerary for our brand was being operated and received by our guests.

We held an all crew meeting, and then any crew member that wanted to meet with us 1:1 came by to visit to share their feedback, suggestions or concerns. The biggest number of crew feedback is really around our career “pipeline.” We had a number of defined positions with specific career tracks. Our crew is always anxious to get promoted, so they do the interviews and qualifications for the new position they want, and then they go into the pipeline for when a position becomes available. They usually come to see us too because they want us to know that they are anxious to grow with the company and want to know “how much longer?”

Guest Post: Kicking Off Royal Caribbean’s 2010 Anchored in Excellence Visits

Delegation is the key to life. Well, maybe not all of life (especially since traveling light is also a key to life and not to mention “Happy Wife Happy Life”) but at least it is a key to keeping a blog going. I enjoyed delegating this space to Lisa during the crossing of Oasis of the Seas so much that I have been missing her entries ever since. Obviously the attention to Haiti in the last month has made everything else a moot point but now I would like to move forward with “Fridays with Lisa.” I don’t want to give her a heart attack so I’m not insisting on every Friday. But hopefully most Fridays she will chip in with her observations about some aspect of the wide and wonderful world of Hotel Operations at Royal Caribbean International.

Today, Lisa will be talking about her AIE visit. During the course of the year our top operations executives visit every ship in the fleet, as Lisa describes below. Although I do not do these visits myself anymore, I regard the 10 + years of Anchored in Excellence (AIE) program and my own 117 AIE ship visits as true highlights. I congratulate Lisa Bauer and Bill Wright for continuing to enhance AIE.

AIE 2010 Kick-off

A few weeks ago I spent a week in Brazil where we officially kicked off the Anchored in Excellence (AIE) visits for the year. We were able to spend time sailing with both Vision of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas, and as a bonus, we were also able to visit our office in Brazil.

AIE is a program where we visit each ship in the fleet, and meet with the shipboard Executive Committee, attend both hotel and marine departmental meetings, host an all crew session, as well as invite any crew member to come see us for any 1:1 topics they would like to discuss. When sailing with the ship, we also have the ability to see how guests are enjoying the ship, as well as how our crew is interacting with our guests. A personal highlight for me from this trip was a dinner hosted by Captain Tommy on the Splendour of the Seas where they served all local Brazilian dishes.
