Guest Blog: Oasis of the Seas Naming Ceremony

We are within one month of the delivery of Oasis of the Seas. Very, very exciting. As we proceed through the phases of the process that will end with the December 1st four night cruise and the December 5th seven night maiden voyage, I will partner with our SVP Hotel Operations Lisa Bauer to give you an appreciation for many aspects of the preparations. Of course, you can always check out Richard Fain’s blog for even more on Oasis. Today, Lisa discusses the one-night naming and charity cruise on November 30th:

One of the greatest and best known nautical traditions is the official Naming Ceremony of a new ship, along with the champagne bottle breaking by the Godmother to officially christen the ship. Oasis will follow this time honored tradition and will have her official ceremony on Monday, November 30th. Many of our valued customers have asked us how they could attend, and you could actually say that attending the festivities on this day would be a priceless experience, because you can’t just buy a ticket or get invited. However, there is one way to be able to be part of history that day…..

Some Updates From Random Points of View

Management life – We had a Board of Directors meeting last week. Obviously it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on matters we discussed with the Board. But I mention it because each of our four Board meetings per year is a big deal. Although we discuss issues that we already spend a lot of time on as management, preparing for a Board meeting really makes you think about what you are doing and saying. It isn’t just the Board meeting itself. The committee meetings the day before are important too. The audit committee is not usually an edge of the seat affair but it is a crucial component of proper governance in the 21st century. Meanwhile, the discussions we have in the safety, security and environment committee are always extremely beneficial to our oversight of the most sensitive areas of the business. I thought this was a particularly good meeting especially in light of the challenging nature of the current business environment.

My Involvement Outside of Royal

Occasionally I’ll take a break from writing about Royal Caribbean to comment on my involvements outside of overseeing a global cruise line.  Yes there are challenges involved in doing my day job, participating in two major “other” activities one of which I will describe here, spending quality time with my family, training intensively for running races and taking table tennis lessons.  But these are all things I’m dedicated to doing.

For the last three years I have been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of a wonderful organization named Our Kids of Miami-Dade, Inc.  I was also on the Board for three years before that, overseeing the System of Care Committee.  Our Kids is the lead agency in Miami-Dade and Monroe (i.e., the Keys) Counties for foster care and related services.  We are responsible for the system of care that must deliver quality and safety to approximately 4,000 children who have been placed under the state of Florida’s supervision because their parents were judged to be at least temporarily unfit to be parents.  We receive about $95 million per year in funding from the state to do our job, plus there is federal Medicaid funding that supports the system of care.
