So why do I blog? I was forced to confront this question when I gave a speech to a Conference Board gathering the other day in New York. The topic was on building brand loyalty. In 2011 this topic requires one to talk about social media. If you are doing a CEO blog and you are talking about social media to a group of CEOs, you are going to have to say something about your blog. Or at least that’s how it seemed to me.

- Someone once said the business of America is business. Even taking that into consideration, the outpouring of grief and accolades for Steve Jobs after his death was remarkable. And it wasn’t limited to America. There is a global recognition that his leadership and accomplishments were transformational. As both an admirer and a customer, I join in the mourning of his untimely passing and wish the leadership of Apple well in the daunting task of carrying on with Jobs’ vision. He obviously inspired a lot of people. Who else do you find similarly inspirational?

One of the striking features of cruising is its complexity. When hospitality intersects with maritime, the result is — a lot of variables!
Usually we master the variables in a way that reinforces the world class reputation Royal Caribbean is fortunate to enjoy. This blog just posted an entry about a spectacular passport retrieval that saved a cruise with minutes to spare. There are many stories directionally like that and we are proud of our people who so often deliver the WOW.
The complexity produces two consequences from time to time. First, we sometimes fail to read a guest situation correctly and the failure has implications. Second, we sometimes do get things right but there is nevertheless a perception that something is amiss. In recent days, we have experienced one of each. This blog provides an opportunity to comment on such matters.

Recently I had the opportunity to join Radiance of the Seas in Alaska for an Anchored in Excellence visit, as well as to see the results of the recent dry dock. The transformation in a number of the venues is unbelievable. Perhaps the biggest examples are the addition of the Quill & Compass, an authentic English pub offering an extensive selection of imported beers and ales, along with the variety of all the new dining venues. I was only onboard for three days, so it took a lot of effort to “sample” all of the experiences. It was a high caloric visit needless to say.

Does Royal Caribbean’s Choice Air program allow guests to arrive at their destination several days prior to the sail date? We are considering Mariner of the Seas this October.

Is there a height restriction for ships coming to the Port of Baltimore? Can Radiance or Voyager class ships make it under the Chesapeake Bay and Key bridges?

Good question Jim. Yes there is a height restriction. Radiance class ships are able to clear the bridges however the Voyager and Freedom class ships cannot.
Any plans to bring back the roundtrip 14-night from San Diego to Hawaii?

At this time we are not planning to bring back the roundtrip 12 night sailing from San Diego to Hawaii.
